Pokemon DS Tournament Report

Well, the inaugural Pokemon DS Tournament at Game Wizard is behind us and it's time to report.

Bueno, ya el primer torneo de Pokemon serie DS en Game Wizard ha pasado y es tiempo para reportar.

For all those players in Puerto Rico who are seeking to battle their pokemon, this is the place to go on saturdays.

Todos esos jugadores en Puerto Rico que buscan un lugar donde batallar sus pokemon, este es el lugar para ir.

As you can see in the video, my team and I were prepared. However, a new wave of pros turned the competition to a new level.

Como ven en el video, mi equipo y yo llegamos preparados. Como sea, nada nos preparo contra la nuva ola de jugadores profesionales que crearon un nuevo nivel para esta competencia.


While only 2 of us made it into the Top 4 (not me), Casper finished the tournament at second. Therefore showing to be the surprise factor of the group.

Mientras solo 2 de nosotros llegamos al Top 4 (yo no llegue), Casper termino segundo en el torneo, demostrando que es el factor sorpresa del torneo.

Let's see if the following weeks are just as intense.

Vamos a ver si las proximas semanas siguen igual de intensas.

Eevee Decks

Besides my anxiety for the Amazoness cards in the upcoming DREV set for August, it's not the only game with new deck ideas coming in.

Pokemon will also have a new set in August (I believe), and it's sure to pack quite the deck...with Eevee!


Umbreon was the first one to make me see how interesting the Eevee decks were going to be...

EvoBlast (1 Darkness, 2 Colorless) This attack does 50 damage plus 10 more damage for each Pokémon that evolves from Eevee on your Bench.

EvoBlast Umbreon sounds like a really fun card to have, especially concerning that we still have this Eevee...

With this, we can basically have a great Eevee Toolbox engine going on.

Now that's an interesting deck I would like to see come August.

Politoed

Well, I previously posted a deck idea about a deck that utilized Politoed's (HS-Unleashed) ability to switch via Poke-Power Poliwrath and Slowbro.

But now that the new format has arrived, this older Politoed has been discovered in my quest to learn about the older sets. With this little guy, the entire Poli group gets quite stronger.

Now...if I were to use 1 for the switch and 1 for the boost, Poliwrath's Dynamicpunch would be able to do a total of 120 minimum base damage (without applying weakness and resistance) and even more if I flip heads.

This doesn't compare to the Feraligatr/Blastoise deck...but it sure makes quite the fun deck to use for the league.

Wrath and Toad

This one's for the Pokemon TCG players out there...

HS-Unleashed has given me an interesting idea...

Water decks got some good support there, so what kind of idea could I have seen?

Poliwrath and Politoed

First off, Politoed has quite the interesting ability: Overturn

Once during your turn (before you attack), you may switch your Active Pokémon with 1 of your Benched Pokémon. This Power can't be used if Politoed is affected by a Special Condition.

Now, using Poliwrath as the main attacker, while using other Pokemon such as Slowbro to inflict status changes to your opponent's active Pokemon can be an interesting idea.

Use big yawn with Slowbro, both sleep. Next turn, switch Slowbro via Overturn and bring out Poliwrath.

Still working on the details, but that's a little something I came up with.

Charizard: Then and Now

Back when I started playing the Pokemon TCG ten years ago...there was a force to be reckoned with in the meta in the form of Charizard. It was the most unstoppable thing back in the day. Everybody wanted it.

You took Charizard to tournaments and the only thing that could stop you was the famous Blastoise (still my favorite card). Other than that, you would destroy everyone at your local tournaments.

Flash forward to present day.

Today, upon my return to Pokemon tournaments after a 10-year hiatus, who do I see in my first round? Why, none other than Charizard. And in all this time, it hasn't missed a beat!


However, this one seemed much more frightening than the one from my early teens. This one can do up to 80 base damage for one fire energy, and it's all thanks to it's poke-body. Fire Formation allows Charizard to gain 10 more damage for each fire Pokemon in your bench.

This power alone makes it much more threatening than it's predecessor from my teen years. This one can deal a whopping base 130 damage with Burning Tail if you have a full bench (and that's not even applying weakness here). It certainly puts Fire Spin to shame.

By allowing Charizard to deal nearly 80 base damage (if your bench is full of fire pokemon) for one energy, you can clear your opponent's team for a clean sweep. This card is sweeping my local meta by storm...and there's barely any way to stop it quickly.

It seems that as time goes on, the titans of the past seem to get even stronger in this game. I don't even want to imagine what the Charizard of 2020 would look like!

HS-Unleashed Pre-Release Promo...

Well, May is almost upon us and it's time to look ahead to the next expansion! This time around, the promo to the next set is Blastoise.

It's a Stage 2, 130HP Water pokemon with a retreat cost of 3 and double weakness to electric.

It's Poke-Power is "Washout" and it's effect reads...

You can use this power any number of times during your turn. Move 1 Water Energy attached to one of your Benched Pokemon to your Active Pokemon. This power can’t be used if this Pokemon is affected by a Special Condition.

This is quite a good card to have if you want to distribute your energy supplies between the benched and active pokemon. Combined with Feraligatr Prime, it can be quite effective. Why combined with Feraligatr? Let's see it's main attack..."Hydro Launcher"

For 2 Water and 2 Colorless energy cards you return 2 Water Energy attached to Blastoise to your hand, and do 100 damage to 1 of your opponent’s Pokemon without applying weakness and resistance for those pokemon on the bench.

Combined with Rain Dance, you can be guaranteed to do 100 damage every turn. Quite good, huh? Let's see where this idea goes...

Ninetales...Burning Draw Support

Even though HS-Unleashed is around the corner, there is one card from the HGSS set that is worth mentioning.


Ninetales has been one card that's suddenly taking the game by storm. It's being searched in nearly every place I go to (the search for Dark Armed Dragon suddenly turned into a Ninetales hunt). So what makes this card incredible? Let's take a look...

It's Poke-Power allows you to draw 3 cards by simply discarding a fire energy card from your hand. The cost is easily obtainable, it can be activated from the bench, and allows deck flow. What's not to like?

If you are running a fire deck, then this card is definitely worth running. Combined with Fisherman, you could have one great consistent draw engine.

Annoying card...Meganium, the new boss!

Recently, I have picked up the Pokemon TCG after a 10 year absence from the game. Yesterday I returned to the league with my deck and encountered the biggest obstacle yet...Meganium.

From all the new Gold/Silver structure decks, this one is probably the toughest of the 3 starters. Yes, Feraligatr and Typhlosion all have incredible attacks and all, but it's Meganium who gains a degree of control through the entire match.

If you see it coming, get rid of it quickly. It will take you down if you're not careful.
